The informal settlement of Majengo in Nairobi, Kenya is plagued by persistent violence, including terrorism and gang-related activities, leading to the loss of many young lives and exacerbating social and gender inequalities. The lack of safe spaces and limited educational resources further compound the challenges faced by the community. This environment exposes children and youths to various risks, such as early sexual activity, sexual violence, and the detrimental effects of poverty. These adversities hinder educational opportunities and compromise the overall well-being of families in the community.

In our Mentorship Program, Jenga Lives Community Based Organization aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for the youth living in the informal settlement of Majengo, Nairobi, Kenya. We believe that through mentorship, we can empower and guide young individuals to overcome challenges, gain new skills, and build a brighter future for themselves.

1. Film Making Mentorship: In collaboration with our Kijee TV and radio project, we offer a film-making mentorship program that equips young individuals with essential skills in videography, editing, and storytelling. Through this mentorship, participants not only learn practical skills but also channel their creativity in conveying impactful messages to their community.

2. Boys Mentorship: Recognizing the unique challenges faced by young boys in Majengo, our mentorship program focuses on addressing issues such as peer pressure, violence, and emotional well-being. Trained mentors engage in open dialogues, guiding them towards making positive choices, and fostering their personal growth and development.

3. Girls Mentorship: Jenga Lives understands the specific challenges faced by young girls in Majengo. Our girls mentorship program provides a safe space for discussion, addressing topics like self-esteem, gender equity, early marriage, and reproductive health. We aim to empower young girls to assert their rights, make informed decisions, and break the cycle of inequality.

4. Makeup Skills Mentorship: As a unique approach, we combine mentorship in makeup skills with reproductive health education. This program not only teaches practical makeup techniques but also includes discussions on self-expression, body positivity, and menstrual hygiene. This holistic approach fosters self-confidence and equips young individuals with skills that can be used to generate income or pursue a career in the beauty industry.

5. Baking Skills Mentorship: Our baking skills mentorship program provides opportunities for young individuals to learn baking techniques, food hygiene, and entrepreneurship. This program aims to equip them with a valuable skillset that can lead to income-generating opportunities or future employment in the culinary arts industry.

6. Provision of Sanitary Towels: In addition to mentorship programs, Jenga Lives recognizes the importance of ensuring menstrual hygiene for girls in the community. Therefore, we provide sanitary towels to girls on a monthly basis. This initiative not only promotes their health and well-being but also allows them to continue their education without interruptions.

Our mentorship programs are designed to cater to various needs and interests, and we continuously explore new ideas and suggestions from both mentors and mentees. By providing tailored and specialized mentorship experiences, we aim to empower the youth of Majengo, uplift their communities, and create a brighter future for all.
In our Talent Development Program, we aim to identify, nurture, and showcase the untapped talents within the informal settlement of Majengo. We believe that every individual possesses unique skills and abilities that, when properly harnessed, can contribute to their personal growth and the betterment of their community.
To achieve this, we work closely with theater groups, music bands, and dance crews. These groups provide a platform for talented individuals to express themselves and showcase their skills. We offer guidance and support to help them explore their artistic potential and develop their talents to the fullest.

Here are some of the various ways we implement our Talent Development Program: 1. Talent Scouts: We have dedicated talent scouts who actively seek out individuals within the community who show potential in various creative fields. These scouts connect with local schools, community centers, and other organizations to identify young talents who may be interested in participating in our program.

2. Training and Workshops: We organize regular training sessions and workshops to enhance the skills of aspiring artists. These sessions are conducted by professionals in their respective fields, who provide expert guidance and mentorship. Training areas may include vocal coaching, dance techniques, theatrical performances, instrument mastery, and more.

3. Collaborative Projects: We encourage collaboration among talented individuals to foster creativity and promote teamwork. Through collaborative projects, artists from different disciplines can work together to create unique and impactful performances or productions. This allows them to learn from each other's talents and develop a broader range of artistic skills.

4. Showcases and Performances: We provide opportunities for talented individuals and groups to showcase their skills and performances to the wider community. These can range from small community events to larger-scale concerts and performances. By organizing such showcases, we aim to increase the visibility of these artists and provide them with valuable exposure and recognition.

5. Networking and Promotion: We actively work towards creating networks and connections with professionals and organizations in the arts and entertainment industry. Through these connections, we help talented individuals find opportunities for further growth and exposure beyond the local community. This may include collaborations with established artists, participation in festivals and competitions, and access to educational and scholarship programs.

6. Skill Diversification: We encourage individuals to explore various avenues within their chosen field of talent. For example, a dancer may be encouraged to learn more about choreography, while a musician can explore music production or songwriting. By diversifying their skillset, individuals can become more well-rounded artists and increase their potential for success.
